Will Black Friday Seasonal Hiring Lead to More 2011 Permanent Jobs?
Black Friday holiday sales will be important in defining how the year 2010 ends and how 2011 will begin. There is some evidence that this Black Friday 2010 has been somewhat of a success. Retailers are stating that shopping traffic has been steady and higher than last year. Consumers are stating in various reports that they are satisfied with prices and offerings from electronics makers that are helpful on the wallet. Prices have been cut significantly for many holiday savings deals in efforts to unload inventory.
There is also some evidence that seasonal hiring from department stores and electronics retailers has improved compared to last year. If Black Friday is successful and retailers are able to show good numbers, they may be able to keep more staff as full time hires than they did last year when jobs were still falling in some parts of retail. Some consumers are better off than they were last year as the jobs market has been slow but steady and anticipation has grown that the job market may have an unexpected increase in hiring within the next few quarters. Hiring in the private sector may begin to grow faster if consumers spend this holiday and retailers are more optimistic about selling their products.
